Computer Fun Badge
1. Get Set Up (Sun. 12/12/10):
To create a healthier work environment when using the computer, you should do these things:
Develop your brain by reading books, going outside, and talking face-to-face with people.
Protect your eyes by not sitting too close to the computer or the tv, and using soothing color combinations on the computer screen.
Protect your ears by keeping the volume down to protect your hearing and the hearing of others.
Be good to your body by having a foot rest when sitting at the computer, and don't sit in one position all of the time.
2. Just the Basics (Sun. 12/12/10):
I demonstrated the ability to create a document using Microsoft Word, saving that document, adding bullets to a list (which was really fun to do because it had so many different pictures that you can use as bullets!), using spell-check, and printing out stored information.
3. Computer Artist (Sun. 12/12/10):
I took a digital picture of a science project and learned how to crop, size, sharpen, and brighte, the picture. I especially liked learning how to crop it.

4. Tell Me What You Think (Sat. 12/4/10):
I completed the requirements for this activity at the GSNNJ program "Little Miss Not-So-Perfect." We talked about media advertising, and how the pictures can be changed to not look anything like the real person. We also talked about what girls think about that and how they can be affected by it, and maybe feel bad about themselves. You should make a bubble for all of the good things that affect your self-esteem, and keep all of the bad things outside of the bubble and push them away. It all depends on how you think about things.
5. Getting the Message Out (Sat. 12/4/10):

and Happiness
6. Peace on Earth (Sun. 11/21/10):
Three people who are peacemakers are Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King. I like them all but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Gandhi.
Did you know that Gandhi fasted for 21 days at the age of 63? He did this because he was protesting the unjust treatment of Untouchables, a class of Indians thought to be spiritually unclean. Another famous protest he did was the Salt March, were he lead his followers to the coast to make their own salt because the British were putting taxes on salt.
7. Solve It Together
8. Include Everyone (Sat. 10/30/10):
I saw a program called "Best Friends" that talked about work dogs and how they help disabled people. These dogs do things that their buddy can't do such as picking up things and opening doors. They also had a demonstration of a dog paying for coffee by credit card!
9. Reach Out
10. It's a Pleasure (Sun. 11/21/10):
In our culture, it is customary to say "Hello" and shake hands.
In Spanish cultures, there are formal and informal ways to greet people. For example, "Como Estas" is the informal greeting to someone you know on a first-name basis or when addressing a child. "Como Esta" is the formal greeting.
In Japan, you say "Konnichiwa" and show respect for others by saying the suffix -san to their name for adults, and for children -chan for girls and -kun for boys. It is also respectful to bow.
In France, they say "Bonjour" which means hello, good morning, or good afternoon. To greet someone informally, say "Salut" which means hi. When entering a public place, say "Bonjour" that will be heard by everyone within hearing distance. If you know the person or are being introduced for the first time, you are expected to shake hands or kiss cheeks, and greeting each person individually at school or work!

Stress Less Badge
1. Create a Personal Stress Kit:
2. Stress Less Writing (Mon. 9/6/10):
I have a diary that I wrote in for two straight days for this badge and I have written in it for a long time. It helps me get unstressed because I can write what I am stressing about and nobody tells me to stop talking about it.
3. What Are You Feeling?
4. Do For Others (Sat. 10/16/10):
I like going to my aunt's house because she is very nice to me and she has a dog Roger who is very funny and likes to snuggle! I like to help by walking Roger and help her clean out the house. I also helpd my great grandmother clean out her house.
5. Move That Stress Away:
6. Listen to Music (Sat. 9/18/10):
My favorite songs are Hey You by Jonas Brothers, A Year Without Rain by Selena Gomez, Baby by Justin Bieber, SOS by Jonas Brothers, and Burnin Up by Jonas Brothers. I also like Sleep by Sylvia. That is a really good song to relax to. Sometimes it can help you to fall asleep. Mom and Dad both like that song and think it is relaxing. It is great for stress relief.
7. Pass It On:
8. Read and Relax (Sat. 9/18/10):
The most relaxing books that I've read are Hello Kitty's Guide to Being Nice, the Harry Potter series, The Secret Garden, Little Women, and Mary Todd Lincoln - Girl of the Bluegrass. They distract me from my stress and are filled with a lot of nice stories that you should read even if you're not stressed.
9. One at a Time (Sun. 10/17/10):
Recently I felt stressed because I had to do a lot of things in one week. My mom and I figured out that I had choir music practice, craft store, French horn practice, a concert, and my aunt's house all in the same day. I decided to do choir practice, French horn practice, my aunt's house, and the concert all on Sunday and the craft store on Monday. It seems like a lot on Sunday but actually it was really easy after I figured out what I could do now and do later.
10. Practice Elevator Breathing (Mon. 10/18/10):
I practiced elevator breathing, which is a good way of relieving stress on the go. All you need is to know how to do elevator breathing and your own breath!

Walking for Fitness Badge
1. Warm Up (Fri. 8/27/10):
We did some warm-ups and stretches that were really effective for us. They were calf stretching, knee bending, arm-reaching experiences!
2. Make a Plan (Sat. 9/18/10):
For a few weeks now I have been walking to my local bank and back. It is about a mile each way. I do this three or four times a week. Sometimes I change my route to the park or into town.
3. Best Foot Forward:
4. Keep Track (Fri. 8/27/10):
We walked by our local park and library. The park has a very nice pond, and that is why I picked it for one of our interesting sites. I saw a lot of geese and a couple ducks. On the way to the park we saw a brook with two fish in it. It's not every day that you see two fish! I saw a chipmunk go into a little chipmunk hole when we were passing by the library.
5. Be Prepared:
6. Fast Food (Sun. 10/10/10):
For our hike today, I planned and helped make lunch and a snack of peanut butter sandwiches, trail mix for mom, and I had EnviroKids for my snack. We also took our Kleen Kanteen water bottles.
7. Weather It Well:
8. Lend a Hand (Thurs. 9/2/10):
Today we did a walk for our local pet shelter. We invited some of our friends over to do the walk near my favorite park. It was long, but it was worth it! We raised money for the pet shelter and collected supplies to donate.
9. Add It Up:
10. Find The Way (Mon. 9/6/10):
Today we took a long walk through parts of our town and followed a street map. This helped us take a new path that included a secret outdoor stairway near a park that led to new streets.

Final Brownie Meeting and Thank You
Yesterday was my last Brownie meeting. We did the try-it Let's Pretend. At the end, we got the patches we needed. I loved my Brownie semester - it had a lot of cool try-its and I met a lot of new people. Plus, now I know how to make S'mores!
Thank you, leaders!

Junior Badges
I've been reading parts of the Juniors Handbook and the Badge Book. There are so many cool badges I want to do! The first one I defininitely want to do is "Stress Less." It has a picture of a hammock on it and the activities are relaxing.

Wave the Flag Try-It
1. Flag Facts:
2. Show it Off (5/29/10):
I made a poster for Memorial Day and another project about the American flag.
3. Celebrate (5/29/10):
Today we went to the ceremony in our town. They raised the flag to half staff. After that, they said some prayers and speeches. The speeches were about why we were really here celebrating Memorial Day. The reason is to honor the soldiers who served in the wars from long ago and today. After that they placed wreaths. Individual people or groups came up and placed the wreaths on racks and flowers on the pretend grave. Then they did a gun salute and the trumpet players played Taps.
Then we went to see the parade. In the parade they had everything, from the Shriners to the local string band to what I like to call the "humorless" clowns.
On Memorial Day, I marched with the troop in another town parade. It was about one mile (roughly), although it seemed like forever because it was going slowly. We had candy that we threw out to the crowd.
4. Check It Out (5/25/10):
We went to our community garden and park and saw plaques from WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam War. There was also a flagpole with the American Flag and a POW-MIA flag. There were some flowers in red, white, and blue. In the other park we saw a plaque for a person who served in the Army and helped rescue prisoners of the Vietnam War.
5. Through the Years:
6. Do Good (6/3/10):
I am collecting items for the Marines and will donate the items at a Flag Day program. I hope the Marines will like them.

All in the Family Try-It
1. Where are you from? (Sat. 5/15/10):
My family comes from another state - Pennsylvania, and Dad was born in California. My grandparents and great-grandparents came from England, France (Dad's side) and Poland, Czechloslovakia, and Germany (Mom's side), and of course America.
I think I am a little American Indian - it was Dad's great, Great, Great Grandma who was from the Oneida tribe.
A family story - when I was a little girl we have good memories of being at the beach with my aunt.
2. Say Cheese
3. Coupon Collection (Sat. 5/15/10):
These coupons are probably the best thing that my parents ever expected. They include the categories of clearing the table, no whining for four days, and doing math/calculus without tears. They have some humor in them and of course expiration dates.
4. Birthday Countdown (Sat. 5/15/10):
I made a birthday poster for my Nana's birthday.
5. Family Fitness (Sat. 5/15/10):
We did the family fun run but we walked and hiked 2 miles. It was strenuous but fun. We went to the secret playground. I swinged on the swings and I went so high I almost flipped over!
6. Make a Family Time Capsule

Space Explorer Try-It
1. The Night Sky (Tues. 5/4/10):
We used my telescope to look at the night sky.
2. The Moon
3. Ready, Set, Jet! (Tues. 5/11/10):
My Girl Scout center on the moon is turquoise blue with a purple door, and the windows are shaped like triangles, circles, and squares. There is a radar that picks up signals from the earth. For instance, if the Girl Scout center on earth wanted four boxes of Tagalongs, the radar would receive that and send a signal back. We would send four boxes of Tagalongs.
My outfit is blue and it has a helmet. It says "NASA" and "Girl Scouts" with a cookie in the middle. There is also a flag on the bottom.
This activity was awesome.
4. Shadow Time (Sat. 5/15/10):
We put the first sticks in the ground at 9:45 a.m.
The next stick was at 10:45 a.m. The shadow was shorter than the first and farther past the first shadow.
The third stick was at 11:45 a.m. The shadow was even shorter than the second and twice as far as the second.
This is something you could use to tell time on a sunny day but not on a cloudy day.
5. Star Maker (Tues. 5/4/10):
This is the constellation Taurus the Bull.

Earth is Our Home Try-It
1. Clean and Green (Thurs. 4/22/10):
I made these natural cleaning products:
Glass Cleaner - made of vinegar and water. It was awesome! It worked so well.
Bathroom Cleaner - made of baking soda and water. That worked really well also.
Furniture Polish - made of canola oil and lemon juice. The furniture really shined!
2. Project Recycle
3. Stop a Draft (Thurs. 4/22/10):
I made a draft stopper out of an old towel, string, and decorations. It's a good size to stop a draft in the kitchen window.
4. Cooking with the Sun (Fri. 4/23/10):
The solar cooker was a good idea but it didn't get hot enough to roast the marshmallow. It did get warm, though.
5. Recipe for a Miniworld (Fri. 4/29/10):
I put purple flowers, moss, and some flat stones in a little container and it was so full, we couldn't put the lid on, but that's ok. I watered it with a watering can and set it on the kitchen windowsill.
Happy Earth Day!
6. Earth's Caretakers
Plants Try-It
1. Seed Race
2. Plant Rubbings (Sun. 5/2/10):
There were little dots on the tree rubbing and a little circle of dots on the tree rubbing. The leaf rubbing came out really well. It was a maple leaf.
3. Baby Beans
4/29/10 -- In progress. We are trying frozen soy beans called edamame because we didn't have dry soy beans or lima beans. So far, we just put the saoy beans in water to let them thaw out overnight. Stay tuned for the beans update!
4/30/10 -- In progress. We put the beans in the jar with the wet paper towel.
5/18/10 -- The edamame beans didn't grow, so we are trying again with dried red and white beans that we soaked overnight. We set them up in the jar with wet paper towel.
5/23/10 -- The beans are starting to grow and coming out of their shell! They are growing really fast! You can see the roots really well. The outsides separated and the sprout is coming out from the top part of the beans.
4. Leaf Hunt (Sun. 5/2/10):
My favorite leaf was the dandelion leaf. I liked that one because it looks like a million arrowheads all stuck together. Some people eat dandelions but I don't.
5. Simple Plants (Thurs. 4/22/10):
We wet the paper towel, waved the bread, gave it dust, wrapped in foil and placed in a dark spot. My favorite part was the waving of the bread!! Stay tuned for the mold update!
4/29/10
The Mold Update!
The mold update is that we found mold! We found it on the bread and also on the paper towel. the mold looks like diced green parsley. It smelled a little like garbage. It was very icky, but interesting.

Safety Sense Try-It
1. Street Safety
2. Fire Safety Practice (Thurs. 4/8/10):
Our Brownie troop meets in a school classroom, and sometimes the events are held in the gym. For the classroom, the nearest exit is the front door of the school. For the gym, the nearest exit is gym door to the outside. If those exits are blocked, we can move ot another exit or go out the window.
3. Smoke Alarm (Thurs. 4/8/10):
A smoke alarm is also called a smoke detector. It is made up of two different parts -a detector that detects smoke and a very loud horn that wakes people up to warn them about the smoke. We have smoke alarms in our house on each floor. It sounds like a loud beep - very loud! When we hear the alarm, stay low and go out fo the nearest door. First you must check to see if the door is hot. If the door isn't hot you can go. If the door is hot, go to another exit. If you need to, you can go out of the window. Meet your family at the front tree or around the building at your meeting spot.
4. Playground Safety (Thurs. 4/8/10):
Some rules we can use to make sure playgrounds are safe:
Don't use playground equipment improperly.
Don't turn, misshape, or misform the swings.
No pushing.
Be careful when climbing on high things.
Always listen to an adult if there is something you should do to play safer.
5. First Aid (Thurs. 4/8/10):
We practiced the Heimlich Maneuver on each other and by ourselves. That actually works!
6. Safety Center

Animals Try-It
1. Caring for Pets (Tues. 3/23/10):
My aunt's dog Roger needs food, water, the veterinarian, dog grooming, toys, exercise, bathroom outside, walks, and lots of love to stay healthy. Conniel also had parakeets, chameleons, and hamsters. You had to feed the chameleon live crickets! She said that the dog was the best pet. (I think you can guess what was the worst!)
2. Understanding Animals (Fri. 3/26):
We visited Pyramid Mountain and did activities about watching fireflies communicate by blinking codes, watching and identifying different animal's eyes, and listening to the sounds that different animals make. It was fun, and I made a new friend from another troop.
3. Creature Moves (Tues. 3/23/10):
a. Rabbit Hop
b. Seal Slide
c. Elephant Walk
d. Crab Scuttle
e. Inchworm Crawl
f. Frog Jump
g. Snake Slither
4. Looks Mean Something (Fri. 3/26):
At the Pyramid Mountain program we played a game where we had to guess what animal we were wearing on our back by asking questions about its body and habitat. It was fun.
5. Sounds Charades (Tues. 3/23/10):
I made the sounds for these animals:
chicken
fly
horse
donkey
sparrow
lion
frog
elephant
rattlesnake
sea lion
cow
parrot
alligator
monkey
cat mouse
owl
I thought that it was hard to think of how to make the cricket sound so I didn't do it!

Healthy Habits Try-It
1. Community Helpers
2. Beautiful Smile (Thurs. 4/1):
We read about keeping teeth healthy, brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist. I visit the dentist every 6 months. The teeth cleaning chart was easy to do, although I need to get better at brushing in the mornings - I forget to do it.
3. Calcium Counts
4. Smoking, a Bad Habit (Sat. 3/27):
We read information on smoking and discussed why it is bad for you. The code message is "Don't smoke!" I will do more research on smoking and health.
5. Washing Works (Sat. 3/27):
We read about hand washing and how it prevents the spread of germs. I thought the song was cute! It is also the Alphabet Song. When I did the activity, I sang the song and made sure that I washed my hands properly.
6. Feelings Game (Thurs. 4/1):
I drew the pictures on index cards and we played the game of sharing a time when I had that feeling.

My Body Try-It
1. Brain Power (Sun. 3/21/10):
Different Muscles - It was a little bit hard to do both together but it wasn't all that hard. Mom did this one well.
Eye to Brain to Hand - I did better than Mom did partly because she held it lower to my hands than I did, but after a while she got it!
2. Dreams (Sun. 3/21/10):
I dreamt that I was visiting my cousins and I was in a house but not their house. My oldest cousin was plaing with a little girl. I realized that the little girl was me! Then I woke up!
3. Funny Face (Sun. 3/21/10):
We did the mirror exercises, and eye exercises. We used our face and eye muscles to do them.
4. Body Volley
5. Muscle Reaction (Sun. 3/21/10):
After 20 seconds, it relaxed because I was tightening and then releasing the muscle.
6. Pulse (Sun. 3/21/10):
It was cool to find my pulse and Mom's. At first, I couldn't find my pulse but then I found it. My pulse went up after running around because more blood was pumping and I needed more oxygen.
7. A Fit Body
8. Body Parts

2. Body Language (Sat. 3/13/10):
The teachers showed us the difference in signing when people use body language that goes along with the signs in order to communicate what they want without getting confused.
3. Getting the Feel of Things (Sat. 3/13/10):
We played "Guess the Feeling" when the teachers demonstrated feelings through signing.

Girl Scout Week - March 7-13, 2010
Today is the first day of Girl Scout Week 2010. I wore my vest and pins to church school and got my paper signed this morning.
Monday I reported on my favorite part of the Girl Scout Law and how I lived the promise and law today. I was spying and that takes guts, so this demonstrates how I am courageous and strong. And that takes guts : )
Tuesday we rode bikes for 20 minutes for exercise, and I used the calculator to solve the secret message which is Bess sells shells bells oil : )
Thursday I followed a street map and gave Mom directions to the consignment store. It was fun!
Friday I wore my vest and pins in the afternoon to the Cookie Booth Sale. That was really fun!

Earth and Sky Try-It
**All requirements were completed at the GSNNJ program "Earth and Sky" on Sat. 3/6/10
1. Can You Dig It? (Sat. 3/6/10):
We put our hoop on a spot and looked at the surface of the ground. It had dead grass, leaves, twigs, and other things. We made a hole 1" deep, then 3" and 6" and noticed that we went into horizon "O" which was the shallow layer of ground. At the 6" hole, there was a little bit of earth clay. It wasn't muddy. We didn't find any creatures but I think we found a worm. We cleaned up after we were done and filled in the hole.
2. Hot Time in the Sun
3. Going, Going, Gone (Sat. 3/6/10):
We went on a hike and saw an uprooted tree, little streams from the snow melting, and very scenic spots. The soil erosion happens when water meets soil and rushes for a long time and gets worn down.
4. Sky Watching (Sat. 3/6/10):
We learned about the different kinds of clouds and looked in the sky to see if we could find any. We saw a contrail which is the cloud that airplanes make. We then did a watercoloring of clouds. That was fun!
5. Creatures of the Air (Sat. 3/6/10):
We saw a hawk and heard and saw the nuthatch. We saw a woodpecker, too!
6. Make a Rock
7. What's an Eclipse?

Although I'm sure he didn't live
in a frying pan.
Way back when they didn't have an elevator,
all he kept was an alligator.
Every morn (and you didn't get your corn)
He would go hither and hither
and swim every day
in the Potomac River.

Brownie Girl Scouts Around the World Try-It
(All requirements were satisfied during the program sponsored by GSNNJ Paramus.)
1. What Do They Call...? (Sat. 2/27/10)
Thailand = Bluebirds
Norway = Brownies
Ghana = Ananse Guides
Italy = Wolf Cub
Chile = Little Wings
United Kingdom = Brownie Guides
Sweden = Minor Guides
Oman = Zahras
2. Where in the World...?
3. Around the World (Sat. 2/27/10):
We learned a song from New Zealand. We sang the words and played the Lummi Sticks to the beat. My favorite part was the flip, and most girls couldn't get that part!
4. Create a Picture Book (Sat. 2/27/10):
We made a scrapbooking page for the troop scrapbook. They gave us a binder with plastic pages for the scrapbook pages. My page had pictures of things that I did, such as the Sit-Upon, Smores, Maracas, and more! I also added some stickers.
5. Global Games (Sat. 2/27/10):
We played a game called password - sort of like telephone but different. You had to trace a letter on a player's back one at a time to spell the word. The front person asked us what it was and guessed the word.
Another game used hula hoops and we had to more them down the line while holding hands. That was better than the password one.

World Thinking Day 2010
World Thinking Day 2010
We participated in the optional service project - a food drive for the Interfaith Food Pantry. This went with this year's theme: "Together we can end world poverty and hunger."
We also did a station called "Be Red Cross Ready." It talked about what you should do in an emergency and what you could do to get an emergency pack. It also talked a little bit about Haiti. Did you know that they were feeding an estimated 4,220 people?
We did "Global Goodies" which talked about foods from around the world. I got to try some of them. My favorite was from Germany - a chocolate cookie. Yum!
We also learned how to Indian Dance. It was hard but fun.
"Willkommen nach Deutchland" was all about Germany. Someday I will go to Germany!
"Signing Fingers" was about sign language. We learned how to sign "World Thinking Day" and some other signs.

Cookies Count Try-It
1. Setting Goals
2. Good Manners (Mon. 2/15/10):
Here is my thank you note for the cookie sale:
3. Being a Good Friend or Neighbor
4. Fun with Change (Wed. 2/10/10):
There are 100 pennies in a dollar. There are 20 nickels in a dollar and 10 dimes in a dollar. There are 4 quarters in a dollar.
I practiced making change with play money. It was really fun!
5. Fun on the Job (Thurs. 2/18/10):
Visiting the Parsippany Shop Rite Bakery was lots of fun. The manager introduced us to the bakery people and gave us a tour. I studied how the cakes and cookies were displayed. I saw a man who was making pizza dough. He gave me a lump to play with. Then I got to see the sugar decorations. It's like the sugar decorations you see on Food Network! As a bonus, I got to make my own cake! It was hard, but fun! I made a clown and some balloons and stuck a Happy Birthday sign on the cake. It was a late birthday present! =:)
6. Cookie Talk (Tues. 2/2/10):
This is what I said to the people I sold cookies to:
Hi, this is Katie! Did you know that am a Girl Scout? I am selling Girl Scout Cookies. Would you like to buy some? The cookies cost $4 a box.
I explained the kinds of cookies and what they tasted like. My personal favorite is probably Tagalongs. They are so good!

Her Story Try-It
1. A Girl Scout's Story (Thurs. 2/11/10):
We heard about Juliette Gordon Low and her story, and the stories of other women who were Girl Scouts long ago and now work for Girl Scouts of Northern NJ. They were really great ones. Did you know that Juliette Low sold her jewelry to found Girl Scouts?
2. Talk to Women
3. Create Tales (Thurs. 2/11/10):
We used "Little Red Riding Hood" and rewrote it for the present day. After we did that we made puppets to tell the story. I was the cupcakes! We acted out the story in the puppet theater. It was cool.
4. A Ceremony to Honor Women (Thurs. 2/11/10):
For this one we had a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was pretty good. My partner and I found a lot of things but the first clue we had to look for was a birth certificate. In the end we found it. We each made a presentation for our famous women to learn more about them.
5. Help in Your Community
6. Your Story (Thurs. 2/11/10);
We made a list of things from the past, present, and things we want for the future. Then we made our timeline and drew pictures and described the events. It was fun.
***All activities for this try-it took place at the council sponsored program "Her Story" at the Community Children's Museum in Dover.

For this one we had a scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt was pretty good. My partner and I found a lot of things but the first clue we had to look for was a birth certificate. In the end we found it. We each made a presentation for our famous women to learn more about them.
5. Help in Your Community
6. Your Story (Thurs. 2/11/10);
We made a list of things from the past, present, and things we want for the future. Then we made our timeline and drew pictures and described the events. It was fun.
***All activities for this try-it took place at the council sponsored program "Her Story" at the Community Children's Museum in Dover.
